In one of my earlier columns, I speculated on the near-approaching death of Peripheral Component Interface (Electronic Design, June 8, p. 100). I also touched on its replacement technology: high-speed serial interfaces and dataflow architectures. These prognostications didn't go unnoticed by readers of Electronic Design. My e-mail volume went up several magnitudes with both positive and negative comments about my predictions (Electronic Design, Aug. 17, p. 78). So, I think it's time to talk about how dataflow machines work, as well as why they make sense as computing's next paradigm shift.
