The ideal power-supply design generates required output voltages and currents with 100% efficiency, occupies negligible space in the system design, and ensures complete safety and reliability. Though perfection is impossible, the pressure to get ever closer to these goals continually grows. In portable designs, efficiency is a growing concern. The objective is to extend the operating life of batteries powering portable computers, wireless phones, and other handheld equipment. Obtaining high levels of efficiency becomes more of a challenge as the supply voltage is lowered to satisfy the demands of new microprocessors, DSPs, and other digital devices.
