The dominant corporate life form in the Machine Age was the oligopoly. The old IBM effectively defined (and certainly dominated) the computer industry. Slogans like "What's good for General Motors is good for the country" were common. Times have changed, and the Fortune 500 has been losing jobs ever since 1974. Still, most of the good corporate jobs are with the large oligopolies. These firms, including HP, Intel, Lucent, and Motorola, are wealthy. They can—and must—invest in training and in new technology.
