Over the next 10 years, an estimated $9.5 billion will be spent on the development and production of the land-and sea-based electro-optical systems and programs covered in this analysis. Of the selected land- and sea-based EO systems covered in this analysis, a total of 286,014 units will be produced. The majority of production is expected to occur in the first half of the 10-year forecast period. From 2015 through 2019, some 153,883 units will be produced, and over the 2020-2024 timeframe, 132,131 units are expected to be produced. The top-five companies in this analysis of representative land- and sea-based EO programs over the next 10 years are Electro Optic Systems Holdings, Thales, Raytheon, Cubic, and L-3 KEO. Because these companies manufacture quality systems in consistent production numbers, their positions in the market have been relatively solid for years. Despite the drawdown of troops in Iraq and the planned reduction of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, such indispensable equipment as night vision goggles, thermal viewers, weapon sights, and laser rangefinders will continue to be produced at high rates over the next 10 years. According to the U.S. defense budget, $783 million will be spent on the procurement of night vision devices through 2019. Some of this funding will go toward the ongoing support of the PVS-7/14 units already in wide distribution, as well as the newer PSQ-20 Enhanced Night Vision Goggle. The coming years will also see steady funding for research and development of next-generation technology for everything from laser-based technology to the all-important field of night vision. While the recent worldwide economic downturn continues to have an impact on defense spending, the Forecast International Weapons Group expects the international light wheeled vehicle market to produce over 36,000 platforms. One of the fastest-growing programs in this analysis is the sighting system family designed to equip at least one of these vehicle programs. In July 2015, General Dynamics UK awarded Thales a $195 million, five-year contract to supply sighting systems and ancillary equipment for the emerging Scout Specialist Vehicle's production phase.
