Electric Machines for explosive atmospheres

Electric machines play a vital role in giving motion to almost all the industries. Generally, machines are selected with different ratings, speed, torque, duty and mounting arrangement keeping in view the application of the machine. Industries like refineries, pharmaceutical, coal mines etc are classified as hazardous locations due to presence of explosive atmosphere and chances of explosion. These hazardous locations require special measures for selection and use of electrical equipment so that explosion can be prevented. The article deals with flameproof, non-sparking, increased safety and pressurized electric motors for use in hazardous atmospheres.
