Wind energy output in February reaches a record monthly high; accounts for 21.7% of Spain's electricity demand

Wind energy broke a record in February in Spain: wind turbines achieved their highest-ever electricity output, generating a total of 4.890 GWh. According to provisional figures from Red Electrica de Espana (REE), wind power was No. 3 source of energy in the month, after coal-fired and nuclear plants. Wind energy's share of demand coverage in February reached 21.7%. This output alone could meet the monthly electricity needs of a country the size of Portugal. This record comes as Brent crude oil prices trade at all-time highs. The average Spanish 2-MW wind turbine annually generates energy equivalent to 7,000 barrels of oil (a single barrel of imported oil in 2011 cost Spain an average of 78 euros).
