Smoke alarm installation occupies a peculiar legal status. We have to look outside the National Electrical Code (NEC)' at other codes adopted by local jurisdictions, such as Council of American Building Officials (CABO) code, or NFPA 72, the National Fire Alarm Code, to find out where smoke alarms must be installed. I call this. peculiar because smoke alarms are such important life safety equipment, especially now that ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) and other innovations have vastly reduced the incidents of electrocution.
