Two months ago, I talked about a typical old-work repair that was added to the partial renovation of a kitchen last updated in the early 1960s. Very confused wiring, far from up-to-date, had stopped working, and I chose to refeed it completely from a different direction. I could have double-fed it. There are real advantages to that exotic but still-employed approach to an ordinary branch circuit, but its legality is questionable. Carter system switching, which allows an outlet to be controlled using one wire coming from each switch, also is very old and definitely has been illegal since early in the 20th century.
