There are times when it's worth acting on a hunch ratherthan troubleshooting a system in logical order. The problem is that solid research has shown stronger hunches are not necessarily more accurate than vague ones. How much attention do hunches deserve? A true master has reliable hunches. When a fire captain has mastered the field, there is consistently less damage and less harm to people. Similarly, a chess master senses developing patterns far enough ahead that he or she wipes up lesser opponents.
