When hole sawing through two surfaces (in this case, a built-in cabinet and a ceiling), with a gap between, I will bore the first hole. Then, I flip the hole saw blade and use it to bore a pilot hole in center of the next surface, extend it to about 5 inches, then flip the hole saw back and use a pilot hole for next bore. It works every time.
