ASHRAE 90.1, developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, provides minimum requirements for energy-efficient designs for buildings except for low-rise residential buildings. The Department of Energy selected ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1 1999 as the commercial building reference standard for state building energy codes in 2002. Since that time, many states have adopted the ASHRAE-based codes. ASHRAE 90.1 2010 includes more requirements for lighting controls than previous codes, including rules for multilevel lighting in spaces using manual space controls and automatic daylight harvesting controls. Experts say new generation lighting controls can eliminate 60 percent or more of the wasted lighting energy in buildings while enhancing occupant comfort and productivity.
