With the rollout of the next generation, higher bandwidth infrastructure and the development of the newer handsets, we're going to see things open up. If industry soothsayers are right, the whole world of mobile commerce, including that of wireless content, is about to explode. Research and consulting firm, the Yankee Group, estimates that the value of goods and services purchased via mobile devices will exceed $50 billion by 2005, up from $100 million in 2000. Yankee says that the number of North American wireless consumers using financial services alone will reach more than 35 million in 2005, a leap from 500,000 during the same period. And we haven't even mentioned email, news, games, music, travel info, and a host of other fundamentals and frills. In order for these rosy projections to pan out, however, there has got to be a revolution in wireless technology, payment schemes, and consumer behavior.
