I've been in the consulting business for about 30 years, give prrntake some sabbaticals in electronic publishing. When I started up Intranet Focus Ltd 10 years ago this month, I had some clear views on the projects that I wanted to work on. They had to be interesting, they had to give me an opportunity to learn, and my work would be able to make a visible impact on the organization. I choose what I want to work on, and I never respond to a competitive tender because the chances that clients can express the help they need in 2,000 words are ridiculously low. It hasn't always been like this. When working for a major consulting business, I had to take whatever projects came in. That was not fun.
