It was a clear victory and, as his centre-left opponent, Francesco Rutelli, promptly said, a legitimate one. Unboth-ered by international warnings about his past business methods, current legal tangles and continuing spectacular conflict of interest, Italian voters on May 13th gave Silvio Berlusconi the green light. Like him or not, here is Italy's next prime minister. Much less usual, he has a solid majority in both houses of the Italian parliament, and may well last its full five years.
