Great Economic Thinkers charts a different course through the history of economics from most recitations of the subject. The editor, Jonathan Conlin, comes to the subject as an historian, with publications ranging from the urban cultures of London and Paris to biographies of Adam Smith and of the oil tycoon Calouste Gulbenkian, and he looks at economics through the lens of the history of ideas. The book's pen portraits of economists show that some economic thinkers were not always right, some were not very clear, and some did not see themselves as economists at all. But they rank as great thinkers because they redefined what the craft of an economist is about.
