With the growing popularity of color liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and additional power-hungry functions such as global positioning systems (GPS) or cameras in cell phones and other mobile electronics equipment, power consumption issues are becoming more critical. One approach that designers are using to improve power management is through use of illumination sensors that can detect ambient light and respond in a way similar to the human eye. If an illumination sensor is used, the backlight of the keypad or LCD can be turned off or adjusted according to the ambient light condition. As a result, power consumption can be efficiently reduced and battery life can be extended.
