Broadband telecom networks are targeting enhanced flexibility, pay-as-you-grow scalability and cost-effective service delivery to remote areas, to achieve growth and profitability. Among the developments serving these objectives, network architects are implementing efficient traffic-processing capabilities closer to subscribers, thereby creating distributed access architectures by migrating these functions away from the network core. In the context of this migration, emerging DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) now range from low-density mini-DSLAMs in "pizza box" form factor up to large local exchange DSLAMs supporting thousands of lines. To deliver such diverse devices quickly and cost-effectively, equipment vendors need to maximize commonality and modularity among their numerous DSLAM configurations.
