A note on classical damping matrices

Over the last several decades, so-called 'proportional' damping matrices have continued to fascinate researchers, perhaps because solely such matrices guarantee the existence of classical normal modes. Still, it should be observed that the construction of proportional damping matrices is rarely useful in the context of a solution via modal superposition.
