YOUNG DESIGN REPORT

Like herds in search of pastures, they move from one design showcase to the next, bringing their projects and hopes with them. They were seen at the SaloneSatellite or at galleries in Milan; they can be found in London, Cologne, Paris and every place that hosts trade shows or events for their profession. They are youngsters beginning their career, students anticipating their line of work, and designers being entrepreneurs of themselves, which is sometimes the only way to realise their dreams. All of them are eager and determined to make a name for themselves, to find someone who can offer them a production opportunity, to become successful. Projects by emerging talents are often the result of designs for competitions. Sometimes they are full of references to well-known products (Droog in particular seems to be a great source of inspiration). But occasionally their content or concept is new, justifying the attention lavished on them. This article is mainly dedicated to entries in the [d3] Design Talents competition organised by IMM Cologne 2009. The Dutch are heralded as masters: first prize was given to a chair that bends in all directions, designed by a former student of the Eindhoven Academy, the same school thattrained the winner of the second prize. Both their projects were shown in Milan at Spazio Orlandi during the 2008 Furniture Fair. Chairs are still going strong in design fascination, joined by lamps, seen in many(not always original) variants. But of course, many of us have learned the trade by copying the work of our masters.
