Twenty years after he first appeared on the scene with a design for an office seating system, Antonio Citterio, with the AC4 series and Rolf Fehlbaum, repeats the performance that made him one of the great designers in the mechanisation of the work environment. The aesthetic of the applied machine is so fascinating that it is constantly being rediscovered, even in post-industrial society, with occasional naivety on the part of the parvenus of art and design. But Citterio sees this aesthetic as that of modern 20th-century tradition: there are extremely minimal shifts in language from the citation of the Bauhauslers and their similars (Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe) in the structural tubular steel of his first AC1 series to the new AC4 series.
