ART, ECONOMY AND CONTEDPORANEITY: THE TASK OF DIFFERENCE

The rise of "aesthetic" capitalism poses a new and problematic reiteration of the relationship between economy and contemporary art. In geographers' and economists' descriptions, the post-modern restructuring of capitalism is driven by an indissoluble overlapping of form, symbol and function. Aesthetics (essentially as a consequence of overabundance) hits the processes of value-formation, and creativity is the philosopher's stone that is sought or synthesised in the seething human cauldrons of major metropolitan areas in mutual competition. "Cultural" and cognitive capitalism would appear to be substituting its older and more backward progenitors (commercial, agricultural, industrial and financial). The art world, too, seems to have joined the party. Compared to just 20 years ago, today's art market is unrecognis-able in terms of scale and mechanisms.%Il sorgere del lato 'estetico' del capitalismo ripropone in modo nuovo e problematico il rapporto tra economia e arte contemporanea. Nelle descrizioni di geografi ed economisti la ristrutturazione postmoderna del capitalismo è animata da una sovrapposizione indissolubile tra forma, simbolo e funzione; l'estetica (essenzialmente in conseguenza della sovrabbondanza) irrompe nei processi di formazione del valore, la creatività è la pietra filosofale cercata o sintetizzata nei ribollenti calderoni umani di grandi aree metropolitane in reciproca competizione. Un capitalismo culturale' e cognitivo starebbe sostituendo i suoi più antichi e arretrati progenitori (commerciale, agricolo, industriale e finanziario).
