Kimball, had a steel frame clad with solid sandstone. The ground floor housed a circular atrium, on the corner between William and South William Street, which led into a large rectangular hall faced in travertine and with a gilt-tiled boxed ceiling. In 1929 the property became the headquarters ofrnthe prestigious, ill-fated Lehman Brothers. At that time the building occupied just over half of a small block between streets cut into the fabric of the financial district's skyscrapers, portraying a period of optimistic faith in economic progress. That was the year of the stock market crash, but it also witnessed the publication of Hugh Ferriss's The Metropolis of Tomorrow. Ferriss's vision of a city of stone mountains, sanctioned by the zoning law of 1916, presented the Manhattan block as a single lump of architecture, a city within a city that Rem Koolhaas would dub as a "culture of congestion".
