The citadel on Mapungubwe Hill formed the focus of this civilisation, and it is therefore emblematic of the potential for Africa to rise to this stature again. The site lies where three countries meet - Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa - at the junction of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers. In this area the natural ecology is being reclaimed in a Peace Park that will see the fences between these countries being taken down to create a regional nature reserve. The new Interpretation Centre serves both the ecological park and the archaeological sites, which together form the World Heritage Site.
