During the war, some aeroplanes adopted a dual top and bottom wing camouflage based on the repeated combination of coloured geometric shapes. The individual forms and colours interact in the composition to produce a compact weave, a mosaic in which the components are simultaneously perceived singularly and as part of a uniform and organic whole, the overall effect of which extends beyond the simple sum of its parts.
