In 1999, the year I bought my first mobile phone, I joined some 428 million other subscribers worldwide. This year, according to the International Telecommunications Union, there are some 6.8 billion mobile phone subscriptions distributed among the 7.09 billion individuals worldwide. We are rapidly approaching total global connectivity by phone.
