Lara Almarcegui

Working, as ever, on the boundaries between regeneration and urban decay, at the Venice Biennale Lara Almarcegui has explored an area of one of the seven Murano islands, Sacca San Mattia: a huge abandoned dumping ground for waste from the glassmaking industry. Her work operates on two levels: the visual impact (a mountain of detritus, carefully subdivided by type, fills the central gallery in the pavilion, obstructing access to visitors) and research (a guide to the island provides information on projects that have taken place there over the course of time).
