Studio-X Rio

Since 2011, Studio-X Rio, a satellite project of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (gsapp), has been bringing together professionals, academics, decision makers, students and the general public to confront the city's most pressing challenges. Studio-X Rio hosts exhibitions and conferences, and at times these events spill onto the adjacent Tiradentes Square, further entangling urban space and architecture forum. An example is artist Raul Mourão's recent series of kinetic sculptures inspired by the scaffolding that was recently dismantled on the square. His work is based on fencing, trolleys, market stalls and other things found in city.
