Born in 1931 in Oita City, Japan, Isozaki graduated from the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo in 1954. In 1963 he established Arata Isozaki & Associates, the base from which he has continued to work ever since. Isozaki is also a vocal critic, well-known artist and cultural activist. His work includes The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma, Japan (1974), The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1986), the Palau Sant Jordi sports arena, Barcelona (1990), the Olympic ice hockey stadium in Turin (2005), the Shenzhen Cultural Center, China (2007), the CAFA museum in Beijing (2008), Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha (2013), the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall (2014) and an office tower for the CityLife development in Milan (2012-2015).
