CITY SQUARE AND CULTURAL CENTRE IN CASTELO BRANCO

With the conclusion of this operation begun in the Portuguese town in 2007, the Barcelona-born architect has created a new centre of gravity within the system of urban public spaces and cultural activities. This project addressed the great complexity of a public space - the Praga Largo da Devesa -while seeking to resolve the traffic and urban problems in the historic centre of Castelo Branco. The specific aim of the Cultural Center, meanwhile, was to turn the old town into a cultural hub for the entire city. The plaza, designed in the first phase (2007), is moulded to the site to accommodate topographical considerations as well as the various buildings that make up the complex.
