WITH 'UTOPIA', LOOKING TO KLIMAHOUSE

To mark the 500th anniversary of the publication of the first edition of 'Utopia', the celebrated work by Thomas More, Fiera Bolzano has sponsored an initiative that invites the world of architecture to participate, by contributing a sketch design, in a collective reflection on the utopia of living: ideas for cities, buildings and interiors free from limitations for a world that does not yet exist but might do in the future. The success of Thomas More's writings is not so much about being a literary work of key importance but rather an opportunity to be reminded that 'Utopia' is not a destination to be reached as much as a direction to aim for, a hypothesis that enables us to rethink our world from a radically different perspective. Numerous designs have already been submitted, from the likes of Carlo Ratti, Thomas Herzog, Kengo Kuma and Thomas Auer, and feature in an installation "Prato dell'Utopia" between Palazzo delle Albere and MUSE - Museo della Scienza di Trento, running from 1 June to 30 October 2016. The designers were also guests and speakers at an extensive programme of cultural and technical events at the Klimahouse trade fair that every year brings to Bolzano experts on the subject of low environmental impact and energy savings, along with a wide and qualified public of designers. The exhibition, that also sees the cultural contribution of Fulvio Irace, architecture critic, journalist and university lecturer, is organised around an account of the body of literary, historic and Utopian contributions, examined together with a selection of proposals developed by Italian and international architects, invited to address the theme of Utopia for Living, in January as part of Klimahouse 2016.
