Nouvel was born in Fumel, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France in 1945. He obtained his degree at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1972. Assistant to the architect Claude Parent and inspired by urban planner and essayist Paul Virilio, he started his first architecture practice in 1970. He was a founding member of the Mars 1976 movement. Recent work includes the mixed-use high-rise One Central Park in Sydney (2014); Imagine Institute in Paris (2014); the mixed-use high-rise The White Walls in Nicosia, Cyprus (2015); and Philharmonie de Paris (2015), Projects underway include the Louvre Abu Dhabi; National Museum of Qatar in Doha; the National Art Museum of China in Beijing; and the Hekla office tower in Paris. Nouvel received the Pritzker Prize in 2008.
