Mario Bellini

Three professionals and three different types of imagery were combined in the executive council of the seventeenth Triennale: Mario Bellini, Leonardo Mariani Travi and Pierluigi Nicolin. They staged their line of thoughts in a sequence of three big exhibitions that were the groundwork for the actual Triennale that was held in the last months of 1988. Mario Bellini was the first to begin, from 18 January to 30 March 1986 with "The domestic project: man's house, archetypes and prototypes" The theme brought to the centre of the debate the culture of interior design, and was the most interesting of the entire cycle of the seventeenth Triennale. Bellini writes: "The critical debate in contemporary architecture has ignored this ambit all too often. It has arrogantly relegated interior design to a minor role, or distractedly confused it with the subculture of decoration, or else (…) attempted to short-circuit it under the disguise of industrial design. However, if we limit ourselves to this century (…) the entire ambit of habitation was often under the control of an architect (…) Mackintosh, Le Corbusier, Mies, Aalto, Wright, Rietveld; Hoffmann, Gropius, Wagner, Chareau, Berlage and Loos (…) all considered it natural, being architects, to concern themselves with the house of humankind."
