Starting in the 1870s, the city of Sao Paulo went from being a small town to expanding its boundaries and being rebuilt almost entirely. Houses and churches of mud and dirt made way for a modern Europeanised city. This required skilled engineers and architects, as well as master builders, workers, artisans, materials, equipment and financing. In the 1940s, thanks to a generous donation by Count Armando Alvares Penteado, the University of Sao Paulo received an art nouveau mansion in the Higienopolis district of the city. A few years later, in 1948, the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Sao Paulo (FAUUSP) was created, based on the architecture and engineering course at the Polytechnic School.
