After his Smog Free Tower, the Dutch innovator Daan Roosegaarde has created the Smog Free Bicycle. The concept originates in a recent Smog Free workshop held with the artist Matt Hope and Professor Yang from Tsinghua University. Much like a vacuum cleaner, the bicycle inhales polluted air, cleans it and releases clean air around the cyclist. It uses the same technology as the Tower: developed by the Dutch company Environmental Nano Solutions, positive ionization removes particulate matter (PM_(10), meaning smaller than 10 micrometres) from the air in its immediate surroundings. Evaluation tests were conducted under the scientist Bert Blocken. The tower removes up to 70% of PM_(10) and up to 50% of PM_(2.5). Smog Free Bicycles provide an energy-friendly solution for urbanites, combatting traffic congestion and pollution. It is currently in the first stage and is intended to generate clean air by pedalling, creating impact on the larger urban scale. Its concept aligns with growing bike-sharing programmes in China such as Mobike, which operates over a million sharable bikes in the Beijing region.
