"Architecture on a new scale": thus opened the Domus article describing the protect report on the viaduct over the Polcevera river valley issued by civil engineer Riccardo Morandi on 25 August 1967 and published with the original drawings and photos in no. 459 in February 1968(we republish a number of the pages here). This remarkable document kept in the archives of the publishing house explains the structural genesis of the massive bridge designed and built between 1960 and 1967. After seven years of work, Morandi inaugurated what was then defined "agrand, conceptually unified work of art". A viaduct over one kilometre in length suspended 45 metres above the ground promised to resolve issues of circulation for the city of Genoa, connecting the Genoa-Savona motorway with the Genoa-Po River Valley motorway. The illusion lasted over half a century, until the tragic morning of 14 August 2018.
