Amid Tussle Over Prices, a-Si TFT LCDs May Grab Lead in Handsets

Waves of pricing pressure are rippling across the entire mobile phone manufacturing industry. Unless a countervailing wave appears, manufacturers may postpone their plans for introducing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays early next year. These OLED displays would be brighter and would offer more intense colors than existing products, but they also would be much more expensive, ruling out their use as the main displays in mobile phones. Instead, amorphous-silicon (a-Si) thin-film transistor (TFT) LCDs may be next in line to become the mainstream display technology for mobile phones in 2005. If this occurs, the a-Si TFT LCDs will replace super-twisted nematic (STN) LCDs. A-Si TFT LCDs today offer the color, response rate and resolution necessary for the color video images that users are beginning to request.
