Patrick Grootaert, an entomologist with the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels, collects insects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Grootaert is part of an international team working to catalog the biodiversity of forests along the Congo River and evaluate human impacts on the region. An ultraviolet light allows the researchers to attract and observe nocturnal insects that are difficult to study during the day; the shirt draped over Grootaert's head keeps bugs out of his ears.
