The Only Constant

In my first editor's note for Discover, published almost exactly three years ago, I shared the maxim of one of my favorite science teachers. He liked to say that "change is the only constant in life." I don't think that he meant to be particularly profound when he said it - usually it was his stock remark to shut up a bunch of whiny high schoolers who objected to learning anything new. I remembered his observation nonetheless and thought it made a good springboard from which to launch my inaugural note to readers.
