摘要

Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are inner mitochon- drial membrane transporters that dissipate the proton gradient, releasing stored energy as heat (1,2), and are therefore considered potentially important determinants of defense against obesity. Three distinct UCPs have been identified so far. UCP-1, mostly expressed in brown adipose tissue (2,3), seems unlikely to represent a major gene involved in weight regulation of most large-sized adult animals (4).
