EU legislation allows, in contrast to OIE recommendations, the use of virological and serological methods as cell cultivation, antigen ELISA, neutralization assays or immunofluorescence for detection and confirmation of fish disease agents only. First the lack of cell cultures, detection and confirmation methods in the case of Infectious Salmon Anaemia virus (ISAV), occurring in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), led to a situation where e.g. RT-PCR was included in the legislation. Fast, high-sensitive and specific RT-PCRs or PCRs, respectively according to nucleic acids, for detection and confirmation of salmonid harming agents as Viral Haemorrhagic Septicaemia virus (VHSV), Infectious Haematopoietic Necrosis virus (IHNV) or emerging cyprinid diseases as Spring Viremia of Carp virus (SVCV) or even Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) or other disease agents as Epizootic Haematopoietic Necrosis virus (EHNV) in different percid species have recently not been included because of a lack of method validation.
