Antibodies to SV40 in Sera from Humans and Macaques

Antibodies to the simian polyoma virus SV40 can be found at comparable titres and rates in sera from around the world. They may be cross-reactive antibodies induced by the human polyoma viruses JC and BK, although this has not been proved. It seems unlikely that vertical transmission occurs from mother to baby in macaque monkeys, where infection occurs, or in humans where it is controversial.
