Gender, Industrialization and Development

Kathryn B. Ward and Jean Larson Pyle review the literature on women's industrial labour and its relation to informal and household work in the larger context of changes in the world economy. They argue that global restructuring in the latter part of the 1980s has involved three trends: a movement toward market-based economies; a rapid globalization of productive and marketing activities by transnational corporations accompanied by substantial informalization and subcontracting of work arrangements; and economic crises involving periodic recessions, debt and the environment. They look at the impact of these trends on women's economic roles.
