A European Perspective on Economics, Gender and Development

Lois Woestman, writing on behalf of Network Women in Development Europe, argues that within the predominant development paradigm economic growth aggravates already existing gender inequities. WIDE proposes that women — from their varying perspectives depending upon their geographical location, class, religion, race, sexual preferences and age — should help to recast the economic development model to one based on "collective adjustment" North and South. Aid and development cooperation needs to be reorientated towards addressing the basic needs and strategic interests of the marginalized majority — women, men and children — in northern and in southern countries.
