Food Security in a Globalizing Economy

The documentation for the World Food Summit, the documents prepared for previous global meetings, and the final statements of those meetings have not engaged the phenomenon of globalization beyond mentioning it as either a fait accompli or a work in progress that is, on the whole, benign and, in any case, inexorable. Nor have these publications questioned the neo-liberal, utilitarian, export-oriented, market-driven, competitive model of development which has brought the world to the situation described, but not analyzed, in the World Food summit drafts. Because they accept market-worship as a kind of contemporary idolatry and hide any challenges to the system, it is usually possible to persuade delegates to these conferences to reach consensus policy declarations and programmes of action.
