The World Food Summit: perspectives from civil society

Since the spring of 1996, civil society organizations (CSOs) have participated in officially organized regional consultations on the World Food Summit. Key position statements have been produced by groups gathered in advance of government meetings in Morocco (March 24-25, 1996), Thailand (April 29-30, 1996), Burkina Faso (April 14-15, 1996), Israel (April 28-29, 1996), Paraguay (June 30 to July 1, 1996) and the US (23-24 June 1996). Several additional meetings both related and unrelated to the official Summit process have been convened in Tlaxcala, Mexico, Managua, Nicaragua, Quebec City, Canada, Copenhagen, Denmark, Quezon City, Philippines, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. These brought together nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), people's organizations, farmer and producer groups, religious leaders, consumers and others to shape and voice their views.
