There are many other steps which need to be taken for women's empowerment in Africa, as in other regions. But the actions identified above are central to all other efforts. It is time that all countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia where women are most disadvantaged economically, socially and politically, prepare their own long-term national strategies for gender equality and for women's empowerment within the overall framework of the BCPA, and then implement these strategies through allocation of adequate resources within a specified time table. Only then will the global commitments become national reality.
