Children and Development in the 1990s: a mid-decade assessment

The closing years of the 1980s saw a tremendous upsurge in interest in the survival, protection and development of children. Many months of dialogue, consultations and debates led to several important events in 1990 — the World Conference on Education for All, in Jomtien, Thailand; enforcement of the Convention on the Rights of the Child; and the World Summit for Children attended by seventy-one Heads of State or Government and eighty-eight other government officials. The achievement of universal childhood immunization, through immunization of 80 percent of the world's children under one year old with six antigens (against tuberculosis, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, poliomyelitis and measles) lent credence to promises for children of these epoch making events.
