The armoured ships - ironclads, battleships and battlecruisers - of major navies are in general well documented and the subject of authoritative books by established writers. Works by Beeler, Ballard and Parkes are consulted for the Victorian Royal Navy's capital ships, Raven and Roberts for later British ships, and Ray Burt and Norman Friedman's epic volumes for both periods; analogous publications cover French, Italian, Russian and American capital ships. Dirk Nottelmann's Warship International series deals with the Imperial German Navy's armoured ships and Linienschiffe to 1918. The Imperial Japanese Navy, however, presents known prob- lems of language and limited documentation, and previous books on its big-gun capital ships have concentrated on the twelve Second World War battleships.
