Over the last two decades, excellent scholarly publications about the historyand practices of slavery—mostly in the Atlantic World—have broadened ourknowledge of bondage immensely. The fourth and final volume of The Cambridge World History of Slavery—a collection of essays by distinguished andauthoritative scholars—falls into this category, an achievement all the moreimpressive given its extensive global coverage. Its chronological boundariesstretch from 1804 when Haiti declared its independence after a bitter twelveyear war of liberation against the French to 2016, which allows the editors toexplore slavery and a wide array of forced and coerced labor such as indentureship, apprenticeship, debt bondage, serfdom, and forced labor in prisonsand concentration camps, and to judge the extent to which attitudes towardslavery have changed over this time.
