摘要

The establishment of the neoliberal world order has included major changes to the spaces, instruments and discourses through which transnational mining companies wield their power. These include mining industry think tanks, lobbying, contributions to political parties, trade agreements, investment protection treaties, revolving doors between industry and government leaders and high visibility public philanthropy. This study will explore how the mining industry uses and legitimates these new forms of corporate rule and the consequent weakening of labour’s capacity to defend workers’ rights and dignity. It will do so through mini-case studies of the initiatives of the USW to build new forms of solidarity through global networks focussed on two mining transnationals, Vancouver-based Teck with operations in Canada, the US, Chile and Peru and Brazil’s mining giant, Vale SA with operations in 14 countries.
